DIY Stencil Art
Stencil art looks awesome, but isn’t always the easiest thing to do. Especially if there is a specific font you want, but can’t find it in a stencil form or don’t have access to a vinyl cutter. After searching Pinterest for an easy DIY, I came across a few ideas. I decided to tweek them a bit and use what I had on hand.
What You’ll Need
- A piece of wood cut to the size you want your sign
- Paint (I used acrylics and puffy paint)
- Paint brush
- A computer with a word program
- A printer (black and white only is fine)
- Saran Wrap Press-n-Seal
- A craft or X-acto Knife
If you plan to paint your wood piece, do that first so it has ample time to dry. Using a word program, select your font style and size and print out whatever saying or name you wish to put on your sign. I chose to make one for my daughter. I found a clip art swirl to add to the bottom and printed that out as well. Center the paper on the sign and cover with the Press-n-Seal, wrapping it over the edges and onto the back of the wood a bit.
When you have your sign laid out the way you like, use the craft knife to cut out the letters. Be sure to press down with a little bit of force so you actually score the wood. This will leave behind a template for you to use when you paint the saying.
Once all of the letters are cut out, you can remove the paper stencil and Press-n-Seal and begin painting! I used puffy paint to give a bit of texture to my sign. This may seem like quite a bit of work for a simple sign, but when you can’t find a font you like in stencil form, or don’t have something like a Circuit to make your own, this works perfectly!
